GET YOUR LICENSE How the Washington State licensing process works.
A simple, step-by-step path for teens, adults, and anyone transferring a license to Washington. Follow the main steps below — and check the exceptions to see what applies to you.
1. Get your WDL number through License Express.
Your WDL number is required before enrolling in Driver’s Ed, taking a test, or getting your permit. Create or retrieve it by making a License Express account.
2. Sign up and complete a course in driver’s education.
3. Take and pass the mandatory proctored exam.
Walk in anytime during testing hours to take the Washington knowledge test. You must score 80% or higher before moving on.
4. Take and pass the mandatory road test.
After passing the knowledge test, complete your Washington state driving exam. All tests are done in our vehicle and entered into the DOL database immediately.
5. Visit the DOL to get your official license.
Bring your required documents to the Department of Licensing to officially receive your permit or license.
WA Driver’s Licensing Basics 6 Important Tips for Getting Your WA Driver’s License
-
You must have one WDL number
If you’ve ever had a WA ID, permit, or license, you already have a WDL number. Creating a second one can cause login issues and delay your testing.
-
Walk-in tests fill quickly
Knowledge tests are first-come, first-served. The last test of the day starts at 4:30 PM (2:30 PM on Saturdays).
-
Bring a valid photo ID
You’ll need a state ID, passport, or birth certificate with a parent/guardian ID. Phone photos or expired documents aren’t accepted.
-
Premier is not the DOL
We provide testing and training, but only the Department of Licensing can issue your permit or license. You’ll need to visit them after passing.
-
Driver’s Ed is required for teens
Anyone under 18 must complete Driver’s Ed to get licensed. Enrollment also allows teens to get a permit waiver before testing.
-
WA rules are unique
Right-of-way, roundabouts, and parking laws vary by state and country. Adults transferring to WA often benefit from a refresher drive.
